As an artist and cultural producer in South Africa Stephen Hobbs will present notions of cultural survivalism within the complex terrain of reconciliation and integration in relation to new models of professional practice (amongst cultural producers) in South Africa. A special emphasis will be on the digital divide in southern africa, work within online and offline culture, as well as the role of media and new technology in a south geo-political position.
2004 marks 10 years of democracy in South Africa, a significant moment that is being met with much celebration and excitement for the possibilities of the next 10 years of democracy. Yet critics within the social, political and cultural landscape(s) of south africa are devising projects and research that aim to investigate the successes and failures of this early period of a new nation.
