Inspired by Raymond Queneau to tell a simple story in 99 different ways, fashion designer Ying Gao (*1973 China) and her Canadian-based lab "Exercices de Style" are applying the same principle to fashion design. At [plug.in] Ying Gao will present five ways to tell a story about fashion in a solo exhibition from January 17th to March 1st.
Ying Gao's fashion explores the interface between media art and fashion design by subtly infusing technology to create aesthetically innovative forms and structures. Inspired by air, light and water, her interactive garments respond to transformations in the physical and social environment. They react both playfully and lightly, are at once vivid, ephemeral and fluid as they are "shaped" by their immediate surroundings.
Designed and modified by technological software, Ying Gaos themed collections reflect on social tendencies as they expose and challenge the functionality and structure of contemporary fashion and conventions within the fashion system.
